What a repeated click can mean

Inside an HDD, read heads move extremely close to a magnetic surface. A repeated, even click often appears when the heads cannot read their position and return to the start. The cause may be impact, wear, unstable power, electronics or surface damage. Sound alone is not a full diagnosis, but it is enough reason to stop.

Another power cycle is not a free test. If a head touches the surface, every turn can score areas that were readable a moment ago. Recovery software should not be run directly on a clicking drive. Software can help with a logical filesystem problem; it cannot repair mechanical contact.

On a quiet external drive you may check a removable USB cable and the correct power adapter once. If the sound comes from the drive, the enclosure was dropped, or the disk appears and disappears, stop. Put it flat in a padded box. Leave factory labels in place and do not remove the metal lid.

Diagnostics separate the connection, board, firmware and mechanics. When the media permits, the first useful result is a sector image on another drive; files are then searched on that copy. The original drive is never the destination for recovered files. If the job needs facilities we do not claim to have, we say so before recovery work.

3. Does the computer show a model or capacity?
