ReadThree rules before any test
Do not write to the media. A new file, an automatic Windows repair or recovery software installed on the same drive can overwrite old content.
Do not accept a format prompt. Formatting creates a new filesystem; it does not repair the old directory or failed electronics.
Separate the connection from the device. One other cable or computer is sensible only for a quiet device with an intact plug. Stop after clicking, a burnt smell, liquid or impact.
