The USB drive is not detected

First note how the stick behaves

A USB stick missing from File Explorer does not automatically mean every file is gone. Windows may show the device in Disk Management without a drive letter, the USB port may supply unstable power, or connector joints may have broken. A failed controller can also present only as an unknown device or report the wrong capacity.

A quiet stick with an intact connector can be tried in one other USB port and one other computer. Use a port on the computer, not an unknown hub. If the result does not change, stop. Ten repetitions add no diagnosis, while an overheating controller can damage memory further.

Do not format even when Windows offers it. Do not create a new partition or run chkdsk. If the stick reports the correct capacity but the folder will not open, the first goal is a stable read to another medium, not repairing the only directory in place.

Carry a stick with a broken connector in a small box so it cannot flex. Do not glue or solder it without the equipment and board map. Diagnostics check the connection, controller response and memory, then choose a method based on what the device actually returns.

Before bringing it in

1. Note the capacity and brand if readable.
2. Say whether it was dropped, wet or bent.
3. Note whether the computer made a connection sound.
4. List the folders or file types you need.
