Choose Cancel, not Format. Do not create a new partition, run chkdsk or use Disk Utility First Aid on the only copy.

Why the format prompt appears

A computer offers to format when it sees a device but cannot interpret its filesystem. The cause may be an interrupted write, a bad sector, a missing partition, an unstable connection or a format from another operating system. The file content can still exist even when the directory will not open.

Formatting does not repair the old filesystem. It creates a new structure and marks space available for use. Some content may remain after a quick format, but names and folders can be lost and every new file reduces the chance. A full format or copying new data to the device is more destructive.

If the device is quiet, stays cool and has an intact connector, one other cable or computer is a reasonable check. If the prompt remains, stop. RAW, unallocated, 0 bytes or a wrong capacity in Disk Management are diagnostic clues, not invitations to create a volume.

A recovery workflow first tries to read an image to another drive. The old partition and filesystem are analysed on the copy. This avoids writing to the only instance and avoids forcing media with bad sectors to reread the same areas endlessly.
